Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge over 395

Relocation of Existing Underground Utilities Begins Tonight

Please be advised that starting the evening of Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge Over 395 project will implement temporary eastbound and southbound lane closures on the MacArthur Causeway at Fifth Street. The existing underground utilities along the south side of the MacArthur Causeway / Fifth Street will be relocated, including a 20-inch watermain. This is in preparation for the bridge foundations. The lane closure(s) will be in place 24/7 and last approximately eight weeks.

Please note the following details:

  • The Alton Road northbound flyover will remain open.

  • MacArthur Cswy. / Fifth Street, eastbound, left lane will remain open.

  • MacArthur Cswy. / Fifth Street, eastbound, right lane will be closed in the length of the turn lane

  • MacArthur Cswy. / Fifth Street southbound turn lane onto Alton Road will be partially closed.

  • Westbound traffic on the MacArthur Cswy. / Fifth Street will not be impacted.

Please use extra caution when driving through work zones, stay alert and follow all traffic control signage and directions. Allow extra time for possible delays due to intermittent traffic disruptions and temporary lane closures. Please consider alternate routes to your destination during this period.

What to Expect / Timeline

Lane closures associated with this phase of work will be in place around-the-clock for approximately eight weeks. Construction activities within the work zone will take place mostly in the daytime; however there is occasional overnight work expected throughout the eight-week duration. Extended times may sometimes be required. While moderate construction noises are associated with the utility relocation work, all efforts are being made to minimize impacts to area residents, pedestrians, and motorists.

Future advisories and updates will be issued as conditions of work progress. Please note, intended schedules could change due to inclement weather or unexpected conditions.

The Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge project is expected to be complete by the fall of 2026. Regular project updates will be shared throughout the project progress. We thank you for your patience and cooperation while the project is underway.

Project Overview and Benefits

Colorful, directional, and mesmerizing, the Fifth Street Pedestrian Bridge is intended to be a new landmark for an already spellbinding city. Composed by master artist Daniel Buren, this new design, titled Walking In, Along and Under the Colors, not only marks the southernmost entrance to Miami Beach, but it also combines a smart piece of practical urban infrastructure with show stopping art and design to nourish the soul. Located where MacArthur Causeway (I-395) meets Miami Beach, and seemingly floating above Fifth Street, the pedestrian bridge acts as the gateway to South Beach.

The pedestrian bridge is designed by French Conceptual artist Daniel Buren, best known for his bold, impactful, and contextual designs that utilize striking color and engaging graphics to emphasize the relationship between architecture and space. He is the brainchild behind some of the most recognizable public works of art spanning the globe, from the 260 black and white marble pillars at the Palais Royal in Paris to the whimsical sails of colored glass at the Louis Vuitton Foundation.
